This video shows you how Sheldon Myeroff turned his custom furniture making hobby into a profitable international custom furniture making company – all after retirement! Success came primarily from specialization with a focus on designing, building and selling custom-made river (epoxy) tables and rustic and modern custom made barn doors. A “river table” is two pieces of natural wood with a river of epoxy resin flowing down the middle. That’s become 80% of his furniture making business.
Sheldon started Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture from his home in 2013, but only became serious about growing the company after moving into a large high-end furniture manufacturing facility in 2017. The Chagrin Valley process is different from other custom furniture makers (builders) because we only make true custom furniture. Epoxy Resin River Tables Making a Splash in USA Homes, Restaurants and Offices: Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture is Helping to Meet the Demand

In 2017, Sheldon Myeroff retired from his executive recruiting company to pursue his hobby as a furniture maker. Flash forward two years – Sheldon now runs Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture, a booming handcrafted furniture company, in a 4000 sq. ft. woodworking shop, employs six fulltime furniture makers and a marketing team, and keeps a dry erase board in his office that is filled with orders for his specialty product – epoxy resin river tables.
“Two years ago, I was making barn doors and live edge coffee tables for friends and family,” says Myeroff. “Now I’m getting calls from well-to-do homeowners, posh restaurant owners, and successful business owners in California, Vegas, Miami, Boston – all around the country – who want something really stylish, creative, and original.”
Epoxy resin river tables typically have two live edge wood slabs with a colored epoxy resin pour sandwiched between. The uneven winding edges of the raw wood combined with the translucent epoxy resin give the appearance of a river flowing through the tabletop. This effect can be made even more stunning by adding LED lights beneath the tabletop to create an ethereal glow.
River tables are both an art and an engineering feat. CVCF spent a year-and-a-half perfecting the art of making river tables before launching their first epoxy resin furnishings offerings.
“It was a super challenge,” says VP and Shop Foreman Zach Schulte. “Epoxy has fluid properties that react differently to varying conditions of time, heat, humidity, and other environmental and physical conditions.”
There are other challenges, as well. It can take weeks to make one table considering the numerous layers of epoxy resin required and the hours of drying time needed for each pour layer. In addition, objects are often embedded in the epoxy – rocks, shells, glitter, newspaper articles, and personal memorabilia.
Every piece that CVCF makes is unique to each individual or business because they tell Sheldon what to make based on their own design concept. Most national custom furniture companies don’t really make “custom” furniture – they only let you choose from a limited set of sizes, shapes, colors, and so on. And most local custom furniture companies that make truly original pieces are one-man or one-woman shops that do not have the infrastructure or workforce to keep a national business model going.
CVCF, on the other hand, has developed proprietary online ordering and fulfilment software that makes it possible for customers to submit their own totally original river table design idea or drawing for CVCF to turn into a CAD drawing for the client’s approval. Then the client is involved in the selection of the actual piece of wood, chooses the exact colors and textures of the epoxy resin, the types of wood or metal legs, and so on. They are then able to follow their furniture via technology as it is being created.
“A river table is the antidote for the craziness going on in the world now,” says Myeroff. “It brings peace, tranquility and natural beauty into the home or office – and that’s what I love about my job.”

From Career Builder To Woodworker: How This Retired Recruiter Transformed His Hobby Into A Business

In 2013, he decided to turn his hobby into a second career. He left Direct Recruiters and informally went into the furniture making business—making pieces for friends, family, and neighbors. “Because I’m an entrepreneur, I cannot sit still,” Myeroff proclaims. “We started out of our garage in Chagrin Falls about five years ago as I was exiting my 38-year career as owner of a recruiting firm.” By 2018, Myeroff officially retired. Business was so good that he officially launched Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture (CVCF) and opened a state-of-the-art woodworking shop and showroom in Warrensville Heights. “It’s a beautiful shop, highly automated,” he shares. “We like to work in the rustic zone and put a modern twist on it.”
While Myeroff says he began by “building everything,” today he has built CVCF into a thriving custom furniture business that serves the public, the hospitality industry, and corporate clients—fulfilling orders from all over the United States. He has about a half dozen woodworkers on staff, with Zach Schulte acting as shop foreman and vice president of operations. CVCF specializes in rustic furniture—many pieces are made from reclaimed barn wood—and live-edge pieces that incorporate the natural edge of the wood into the look. Many of these pieces also incorporate a waterfall (or riverbed), which is a technique using epoxy resin to create a colorful accent.
“A live edge is basically the end of the tree, and it’s very popular right now,” Myeroff explains. “We blend the rustic live edge with epoxy, and it’s one of the most fun things we do. We build everything out of rustic wood, and we use a lot of Northeast Ohio wood—walnut, maple, cherry, sassafras.” Prices are determined based on the project but can range between $900 for a small table to upwards of $6,000 for a live edge dining room table or other larger piece. Myeroff works closely with clients to create one-of-a-kind pieces that fit their visions. “Some of them are conservative and want to do conservative stuff, and I don’t mind,” he says. “But I sneak stuff in there. Then it gets to their place and they say they love it.” No matter what a customer wants, Myeroff assures the design will be unique: “We never sell two things alike—they are all different.” CVCF’s showroom is located at 26309 Miles Road, Suite 4, in Warrensville Heights. The showroom is normally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Myeroff advises calling him at (440) 591-5511 before heading in.
Furnishings for A Christmas Story’s Bumpus House Returned to 1940’s Glory
CLEVELAND, OH – November 27, 2018 – When the folks from A Christmas Story House decided to open the next-door neighbor’s house for rental, they called Sheldon Myeroff of Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture (CVCF) to restore, repair, and recreate vintage 1940’s-style furniture for the house located in the Tremont District of Cleveland, Ohio. A Christmas Story is an iconic movie from 1983, filmed in Cleveland, that has become a holiday classic.
It features Ralphie Parker’s childhood home as well as the next-door Bumpus house. Ralphie’s house and A Christmas Story House Museum across the street were opened to the public in 2006. When the Bumpus home was bought in 2016 for overnight rental, it needed quite a bit of renovation, including selecting and restoring the period piece furnishings. Jennifer Hoffine, Bumpus House project manager, said, “We searched the internet and were thrilled to find Sheldon’s custom furniture company right here in Cleveland. They were great to work with, delivered the project on budget and on schedule and it looked better than we could have ever imagined.”
The furniture was broken, distressed and scratched, with bumps, grinds and peeling stain and paint. It took long hours of furniture refinishing, repairing, and restoration for CVCF to bring the pieces back to their original glory. Furnishings included 40’s-style beds, doors, tables, armoires, side tables – even the kitchen sink which they repurposed from old pieces/parts. CVCF worked on the project from July to September 2018 in order to have it ready for the home’s October opening.
“We loved the project”, said Myeroff, CVCF owner and furniture maker. “We already were fans of the movie because of the Cleveland connection and we were honored to participate in making it perfect for visitors”.

CLEVELAND, OH – Owner and Founder Sheldon Myeroff of Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture (CVCF) named Zach Schulte Partner and promoted furniture maker Ed Johnson to Administrator in response to a record year that saw over a 110% increase in sales. CVCF is a Cleveland, OH company that designs and builds one-of-a-kind, made-to-order solid wood furniture.
Less than a year and a half ago, Myeroff was President of Direct Recruiters, Inc. in Solon, Ohio, a company he founded, spending his off hours making furniture in the basement of his Chagrin Falls home. When he retired in October 2017, he relocated his workshop to a 4000 sq. ft. facility in Warrensville Heights. He hired experienced carpenters, woodworkers and furniture makers, purchased the latest woodworking equipment, and embarked on a new enterprise he had no idea would grow to be so large in so short a time.
“I needed help”, Myeroff said. “I had six shop people but no one to relieve me of the day-to-day duties of running a business.” So Myeroff promoted Zach Schulte, Shop Foreman and VP Operations, to Partner, and Ed Johnson, Woodworker and Designer, to Administrator.
Schulte has been instrumental in CVCF’s impressive growth in 2018. “Zach has always done extraordinary work in the building area,” noted Myeroff. “His superb interpersonal communication skills were an added plus.”
Schulte added, “My goal for CVCF is to continue our reputation as a company that is synonymous with the finest custom furniture in Northeast Ohio. We always want to exceed our customer’s expectations.”
Woodworker and Designer Ed Johnson was named the new Administrator of CVCF. He has been working at CVCF for two years and has over 40 years of woodworking experience, a thorough understanding of shop machinery, and great mechanical skills. “Ed is a shining example of a person who brings a wealth of knowledge from many years past,” said Myeroff. “He fits well into our organization and absolutely loves making woodworking projects that have never been tackled before.”
Myeroff looks forward to a bright future for CVCF with invaluable contributions from Schulte and Johnson.

Zach was born to be a woodworker. His father Hank, a shop teacher at Beachwood High School, taught Zach the art of working with wood from a very young age. Zach grew up in University Heights and went to St. Ignatius High School where he starred on the varsity ice hockey team. After receiving his degree in business from Arizona State University, Zach spent 2 years as a finish carpenter before joining the Chagrin Valley team in 2014.“He quickly became a really good builder because he had a lot of natural ability”, said Sheldon Myeroff, Founder and President of CVCF. “He sees the end product before he builds it, so the finished piece is always spectacular!”
In 2016, Schulte left for Portland, Oregon to ply his trade as a carpenter and home renovation woodworker. While on a visit back to Cleveland, Sheldon convinced Zach to come back to work in his new facility. He returned home to Cleveland in early 2018 to become Shop Foreman and VP Operations at CVCF, while continuing to master his craft under the tutelage of the veteran furniture makers at CVCF. Schulte immediately showed his furniture-making acumen by developing innovative products, new woodworking processes, and increasing shop efficiency. Then, after a record-breaking sales year in 2018, Shel rewarded Zach by elevating him to Partner at CVCF.
According to Schulte, his goal is to get the company to be the “bee’s knees” in custom furniture in Northeast Ohio, to exceed people’s expectations, and to increase productivity while keeping quality up to become successful.
Myeroff said Schulte was the ideal partner in furniture making for “his ability to design, to get products out quickly and on schedule, to get furniture built correctly, to work with customers beyond my expectations, and for his natural business acumen.”

Ed is a veteran furniture maker who joined CVCF when we moved into our new shop facility in 2018. Ed came to Cleveland to work for BP via Freehold, New Jersey, the same town Bruce Springsteen hails from. For over 40 years, Ed has pursued woodworking as a hobby while studying under some of the great furniture making mentors of our day. In addition to his building and designing skills, Ed brings a thorough understanding of machinery and great mechanical skills to his job. He is adept at identifying and releasing bottlenecks that cause work slowdowns in the shop. “He keeps things flowing”, Myeroff notes. “If a machine breaks down, Ed fixes it in no time!”As the business grew by leaps and bounds and running it became overwhelming, Sheldon promoted Ed to Administrator at the beginning of 2019.
According to Sheldon, “Ed is shining example of a person who’s older in age and can fit into an organization and be a huge contribution. He brings a wealth of knowledge from many years past.”
Ed will continue to be an important contributor in the shop, flashing his Stanley Classic 14″ Bailey Corrugated Wood Plane No.5 to use on the really special projects. And as the new Administrator at CVCF he will make sure things continue to run smoothly and is working on a preventative maintenance campaign to accomplish that.
“The move is good for Ed and it’s good for us,” Sheldon said.

In the 1970’s, Sheldon Myeroff founded Direct Recruiters, Inc., a highly successful executive search company in Cleveland, Ohio. However, at the end of a hard workday, his attention turned to his real passion – furniture making. At first, his biggest fans and clients were his family, who asked for special wood projects on a regular basis. Sheldon obliged, of course. Then his friends got into the act. To accommodate the workload and produce high quality wood furniture products, Sheldon built a full woodworking shop in the basement of his Chagrin Falls, Ohio home. He also received formal training in furniture making and worked alongside a highly respected woodworking mentor.In 2013, he resolved that when he retired from his recruiting business in five years, he would start making furniture on a regular basis. In the meantime, word got around about Sheldon’s special talent for making truly unique pieces of furniture that were made to order for each customer’s likes and space. His workshop grew. He had to recruit skilled woodworkers to help with his projects. And, in 2015, he formed his new company, “Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture”, named after the beautiful wooded area in which he lives. When he retired in October 2017, Sheldon didn’t slow down. Instead, he put his foot on the pedal and the business took off.
The business quickly outgrew his basement workshop and Sheldon purchased space in an industrial park in Warrensville, Heights, Ohio. He set up a state-of-the-art woodworking shop with every piece of equipment imaginable and a safe spray room, and invited customers to view the woodworking process firsthand and even take part in the process. He also built a showroom and design studio in the front of the building so that interested customers could see examples of his work and discuss their next project.
In 2018, he summoned one of his former craftsmen, Zach Schulte, to come back from Oregon where he was doing home restoration and carpentry. Zach became Shop Foreman and VP Operations at CVCF. The company experienced over 110% that year, and when 2019 rolled in, Sheldon made some moves to accommodate the increased workload. He named Zach a Partner and promoted veteran furniture maker Ed Johnson to Company Administrator.
Today, Sheldon keeps a staff of about six veteran woodworkers. He specializes in rustic and live furniture that includes dining tables, coffee tables, rustic and modern barn doors, ergonomic standing/sitting desks, dressers, credenzas – whatever a customer wants…just the way they want it!
